My right eye is bugging me again. In complaining about it, I asked the above question on Facebook. One of my many smart-ass friends replied,
“The good news is – the parts you requested are on their way. The bad news is, they were made overseas by the lowest bidder….but yours will probably work just fine…”
I suggested that was a good start to a short story. He agreed and we basically decided to open it for a challenge. If you want to play, let us know (comment here or contact me by email cheryl at dewolfe.bc.ca) so we know how many to expect. If we get enough stories together, we’ll put together an e-book anthology.
RULES:
- Format should be a short story (under 10,000 words)
- Story must include the line, “The good news is – the parts you requested are on their way. The bad news is, they were made overseas by the lowest bidder….but yours will probably work just fine…” — this line should appear in the first paragraph.
- Deadline is April 21, 2012 (midnight PDT).
- Acceptable formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf or other editable format.
- We reserve the right to include/exclude and edit stories submitted.
So are you in?
(If you don’t want to be considered for the anthology but want to write a story, just send us a link to your completed story & I will post a follow up thread!)

Tempted, tempted… count me as a maybe. I haven’t written much of anything for quite a long time (and usually write non-fiction).
I should use that prompt with my teen creative writing group at our next meeting!

Anne, you totally should give it a whirl!
I’m sitting here looking at a word document with that bit pasted in, and wondering how I can use that in the first paragraph without it being the first sentence! Hrrrrmmm….
In my story, it is totally the first sentence.
I’m headed that way as well. Hee hee… I think I’ll just open the file every night when I’m on the computer and work on it – plenty of time to work something out! Thanks for the challenge!
