The past week flew by, partly because my sleep patterns got thrown out of sync. Never mind though, I reset by Friday morning because even though I was working from home (union web stuff) and had set my alarm for later, I was wide awake at exactly the time my alarm normally goes off.
What have I done this week?
I went to a meeting of local freelancers with the idea that maybe we could network and share ideas. The meeting was of some use but I felt out of place, as it’s not my primary job (heck, it’s not even really my secondary job).
I finished my entry for the Monday Magazine Summer Fiction contest. (Mike also entered — his version made me almost snort tea out my nose.) The winners will be announced in July — so win or lose, you’ll get to read it then if you haven’t already given me feedback on the draft version.
I weeded several of the garden spaces, including the area around the strawberry bed which had been over-run with tall grass and I planted some squash, romaine lettuce, and some cilantro and dill (a little late but the season has been stupidly annoying with so much wind and rain). I also added a little patch for some shorter sunflowers (Prado Red and Ring of Fire from Vesey’s) and some mixed “cut” flowers — the seeds were all a little old, so I’ve no idea if any will grow. I’m hopeful though; I’d like a little extra colour.
I drove Kiddo and three of her classmates out to the ferry terminal at a ridiculous hour on Thursday (we left the school at 5:50 am) for their class trip to Vancouver — they hit Science World, Stanley Park and the Vancouver Aquarium — then we picked them up again on the return side.
Working on the Union website upgrade, I’ve been tweaking the taxonomy (the descriptive tags that make the content easier to organize and find) and trying to find a suitable theme for the new site. We are hiring a web programmer to help make my part of the job easier — so I don’t have to do all the heavy lifting of the upgrade from Drupal 5.x to 6.x. I’ve also been working to find the best complement of modules to accomplish what the local needs. Fun stuff.
I’ve watched a bunch of movies: Shutter Island was dissapointing — even if some goof hadn’t spoiled it for me, I would have seen the twist coming a mile off — 1408
started out as ridiculously creepy but then got just ridiculous; Couples Retreat
was okay but I doubt I would recommend it unless it was on TV for free. Of course seeing Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau on screen together made me want to go back and watch Swingers
(which we own but hadn’t watched!) and I was losing interest until it got to one of the best telephone-message-meltdown scenes I’ve ever seen — the kind that makes you yell, “Oh, man, just hang up the phone!!!”
I also tried some new restaurants — now to write the reviews!
Vince Vaughn is one of the best comedians today, he is also a very good looking guy.*`.
