Writing Priorities

Regular readers may know I have a lot on the go at any given time… one of the things that takes a lot of my time is writing — blogging, articles, poetry, and books — not that I am complaining. On the contrary, I enjoy writing. Sometimes though, I get stuck not knowing which should take priority and end up playing games for an hour while I try to decide. Lame, I know.

Part of my problem deciding is not knowing what people want to read — so now I am asking. I’ve put together a survey to ask which of my blogs and book projects you’d like to see more of and which ones I might be able to ditch.

For reference, here’s the blogs I’ve listed:

  • Flotsam & Jetsam (you’re reading it) — I doubt I could ever give this one up!
  • Garden History — while I started great guns, it’s been largely dormant for the last year.
  • Medianook (reviews) — mostly movie reviews but the odd book and game get reviewed here too; Mike also posts reviews on Medianook.
  • Frugal Victoria — more than a blog, while it’s been going for over 10 years, it’s only really taken off in the last two years. If anyone is interested in being a contributor on this one, I’d love to have help.
  • Unofficial Guide to Victoria — I pared this site back a few years ago, for a while it was trying to be everything to everyone. Now it is primarily a spot to post reviews of local restaurants and attractions.

Book projects I’ve listed include some pet projects that have been on my “to finish” list for a long time — a couple are on my 11for11 hitlist — and some are just ideas that seem to have merit.

  • book of nonsense poems — think Edward Lear or Tim Burton — most of these rhyme but are very silly and/or dark
  • urban haiku — a larger collection of my haiku (coffee, zombies, etc) with an urban angst theme, zombie hipsters maybe?
  • Halloween ABC — I wrote the first draft of this in the late 80s/early 90s. When it resurfaced, Mike and I planned to do sculpted dioramas to illustrate the text but we’ve lacked space to set things up for any length of time… so it has lingered.
  • Undead — I’ve got most of the first chapter written and a skeleton sketched out; basic YA sci-fi stuff
  • The Web’s Ugly Side — non fiction guide for users who may not know why it’s important to Not Feed the Trolls.
  • Frugal Victoria e-book — as a book, this would be impractical but as an e-book I could update information as needed. Some would be collected from the site, other info would be unique to the book.
  • Unofficial Guide to Victoria e-book — I envision some top 10 lists, some essays, and some facts and figures.

So… what do you think? Click here to take survey (and if you think I’ve missed something obvious — there’s room on the survey to tell me. It’s anonymous so say what you want!)

  1. Can’t possibly pick. All too essential. Sorry, you must continue to do everything.

    • Darn it! Now how am I supposed to be effective and efficient when you tell me to do it all? Did you at least take the survey and rank the book projects?
