You’ve probably heard time and again, “it’s all about who you know” but I’ll bet you never considered that the most important person to know is yourself. Really, that was the core of the Purpose Party — figuring out what the heck we each wanted out of life and figuring out how to do that.
I just came across a great post by Scott Dinsmore (one of those links from an article that was posted by someone I follow on Twitter…) that sums it up perfectly:
Learn about yourself in every way possible. Test what you’re capable of physically (you think you can’t do a marathon–then sign up for one). Do the impossible. Test how you process information. Do a strengths finder test. Do the the What Color Is Your Parachute Workbook. Myers Briggs. Johnson O’Connor Aptitude. Do it all!
Then actually make something with what you learn.
The process is ridiculously simple:
Step 1: Learn
Step 2: Experiment
Step 3: Repeat
Step 4: Do what you love
Step 5: When restless, Repeat
Step 5 is the one I need to work on, “When restless, repeat.” I really need to be thinking and working my way toward where I want to be instead of sitting in the rut of “Facebook–Twitter–Flickr–Google+–Repeat….” The whole post, “Follow this Process & I Guarantee You’ll do Work that Lights You on Fire” is worth reading — as are many other posts on his blog. I’ve also subscribed to Scott’s newsletter so I can check out his “Epic Work Toolkit.” I’ll let you know what I think of it after I’ve worked through it!
