#AmWriting

Last week, Mike challenged me to have a document open and work on my writing instead of wasting time in Facebook. I thought, “writing what?”

It took me a while but I decided, after going back and looking at what you suggested, that I would work on “Undead” — the YA sci-fi story that has been bouncing around in my brain for some time now. Tonight, I opened up the file and re-read what I had written then added some thoughts to the notes and plot points and character sketches I have in another file. Then I started writing again.

Even if this never ends up in the final draft, this passage amused me:

I honestly think what pushed her over the edge was the coffee shortage — when the big coffee chains started funding guerilla warfare in the coffee regions to not only protect their crops but take over neighbouring farms, the price of coffee started to exceed the reach of most consumers. Eventually, coffee was trading at such a ridiculous price that you couldn’t find it in supermarkets; most restaurants switched to coffee substitutes like Rise and Shine which was based on chickory — something that had been popular hundreds of years back. Now most people brewed Rise and Shine in their kitchens like we did. My mother, however, missed her coffee. Last year, for her birthday I had bought her a gift card for a fresh cup of real brewed coffee. She scolded me for spending $50 but she enjoyed every drop.

If you search Twitter for the hashtag #amwriting, you will find both inspiration and information by and for writers. I’ve found and followed some great accounts through that particular tag.  Now I #amwriting too.
