Many years back, I bought a cheap orange hairband with green leaves and a bit of ribbon for vine. I get compliments every year when I wear it to work as it has become my default costume, along with an orange t-shirt.
Even when I bought it I thought, “Geez. This would be really easy to make.” This year when Kiddo asked for her own, I put my theory to the test.
I dug through my fabric stash and triumphantly extracted a small bundle of orange cotton (or poly-cotton) remnant, found a small length of green ribbon (last on the roll, hurrah for stash-busting!) and a scrap of green felt for the leaf.
Next I asked Kiddo to find me a plastic hairband, preferably one that was wide-ish, that she was willing to sacrifice for the cause and excavated my glue gun.
I roughly measured the fabric by rolling the hairband across it, then trimmed it to be about double the widest part. I started by folding a bit over each end and gluing them securely in place so that the fabric would be taut then folded in one side, gluing along the way to the end. Next, I flipped it around and glued the other side. As you can see in the photo there is a small fold inside where the fabric had to overlap but it does not impact the visible side.
Once the whole thing was orange, I cut out a leaf and glued it on top then curled the ribbon and glued it in place too. Ta-dah! Super simple and no needles required. Sure I could have embellished it, but she loves it and it took less than an hour including drying time. One thing: to truly finish it, I intend to glue a strip of ribbon inside the headband to cover the folded fabric “seams.”
