Friday, we snuck off to the mainland for a quick visit with family. Since it was post-Christmas we weren’t too worried about booking much in advance. We often stay at Holiday Inn Express hotels but a couple of times, we’ve stayed at the Radisson in Richmond.
We love the location (right across from Aberdeen Centre) and almost everything else about the hotel (including a very nice fitness room). The big problem? Sleep Number beds.

Have you ever slept on one? (This guy did and I agree with almost everything he has to say.) They are basically a double-bladdered air mattress on top of the bed which is fine if you sleep by yourself on one side of the bed and don’t move (after you’ve fiddled around to get the right setting). Otherwise, you end up sliding off and crashing into each other. UGH.
So, Mike phoned them on Thursday and asked if they had any rooms without Sleep Number beds. Turns out, we aren’t the only ones to have complained in the past and some of their rooms have been replaced with regular mattresses (they had to get permission from the chain to do so, but we told them we were very happy they did). We booked our room, and we were not disappointed with our bed or our stay.
Today, they sent a follow-up survey and Mike replied. The manager followed up with a thank-you and let us know that they’ve put a note in our customer profile to always accomodate us with regular beds. Nice!
As a side note, we have never received that kind of follow up from Holiday Inn Express. Guess where we’ll stay next time we go to Vancouver?
P.S. If anyone from the Radisson head office reads this, please consider scrapping the Sleep Number beds; you can do much better.
