New Year, Changes Ahead

No matter how I slice it, there will be change in the year ahead — housing (renos or relocation?), work (a new boss or a new job?), and there’s always something that catches a person off guard. So while I will plan, I also hope to just be better armed to tuck, roll, and move on.

I have some goals, but I am not making them public for now. (I’ve tried both in the past, and frankly keeping them to myself seems to work better) However, you can probably guess they include things like reading, writing, financial security, and being better organized.

I used to track things at 43things.com but I only seem to remember that when I get the little memo-to-self auto-reminders about certain tasks once or twice a year. I went in recently and reduced it to 5 things, some of which are far too vague.

I do hope to ride my bike more — now that Kiddo is happily taking the bus on her own I can get back to commuting. The others… who knows? I’ve added the app to my phone, so maybe that will help me use the site more.

Looking aback at this year, and at last year’s goals, I went off the rails early on and never really got back on track.I certainly didn’t get anywhere near the exercise I intended, nor did I do much product promotion, and even my meal-planning goal had some bumps — though for most of the year we were on target there.

The only goal I confidently achieved was to read at least 24 books — in fact I managed 29 (some are shown below). I felt a little pressured earlier in the year so, knowing I can finish that many, I will not push myself quite as hard in 2014. I think 24 books is a perfectly  respectable number so I will leave it at that for next year. I was surprised to find that just over a third were graphic novels (10 titles) and only 6 were e-books.

In addition to the “doing” goals, I am setting some personal “being” goals, too. I already started to ditch being a grammar pedant, and am trying to ditch some other habits that are getting in the way of my getting on with life.

  1. Congratulations on surpassing your reading goal! I will be the first to admit that if I didn’t read a lot of graphic novels, I’d never have reached my goal for the year.

I have never been a big fan of public proclamation of yearly goals or resolutions. Everybody wants to lose a few pounds, eat better, be nicer, save money… nothing unusual about that! Having your own personal goals is a good thing, but it does make sense to keep it to yourself.
