Long story short: we all have new phones. My new Samsung Galaxy S4 is housed in the fugliest OtterBox they had available (grey/neon pink); Kiddo’s S4 and Shawn’s S3 are in black cases.
We spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening and some of today fiddling with and familiarizing ourselves with the new technology. We didn’t expect to go in and get Samsungs all-around, but it worked out that way.
The timing was right:
- we were all on month-to-month contracts (I was the last to finish at the end of April)
- Shawn got his Samsung S3 for his birthday last month and was eager to move to an Android from his very old (first generation and second-hand) iPhone.
- Kiddo has been using my old phone since losing her original smart phone.
- my iPhone recently picked up an annoying quirk because of a conflict with my iCloud login.
So the plan was to trade over to a family plan where we could share data and save money. We had planned to give Kiddo my iPhone (after it was purged for her it would be good to go) and get a new phone for me — but I was still waffling between a new iPhone and an Android. In the end, the fact that it would cost less to get Kiddo a new phone than to unlock my old one — we were changing carriers, too — and because they were able to give us some refurbished phones for a much better deal, she and I both got the S4s.
We ended up getting fees waived, the sims thrown in and a few other things, too — pretty much all we paid for were the three cases (my guess is their mark up and/or commission is better on those).
My MacBook may be the next thing to go. I am typing this on my old Dell laptop because the harddrive on my MacBook is failing (the second drive in three years) and the machine crashing randomly — sometimes I can go 3 hours crash free, sometimes barely 3 minutes. I’m fearful that my AppleCare has expired (as of last month) and if that’s the case, I may be using the Dell until I can afford to have the Mac fixed. Sigh.
Until then, at least I have my shiny new phone to play with.
Yay! Hope the new phones are great all around! 😀
Samsung is a favourite brand of mine. My TV is Samsung; love it. Had a Samsung flip phone 10 years ago – loved it, too. Ended up not with a Samsung phone, but there’s a reason for that…
My roomie – a tech genius, for sure – had just bought an iPhone 5 as they came out last fall when be learnt his coworker had gotten a Google Nexus 5. He was suitably impressed with its specs and low price… And annoyed he didn’t realize they were out. He decided he needed one, maybe. I teased him for getting 2 new phones. A lot. He had to decide which phone he’d prefer. Didn’t need two as also carries a work cell…
In the end he just decided he didn’t feel like dealing with switching/getting used to a new phone brand, mostly due to his demanding schedule – I could understand that. But that meant there was this intriguing new phone just sitting there in its box, unused… Waiting to be loved, lol. He’d even gotten a cover that had imprints of the little Android robot on it! So cute!
See where this is going?! Yep. I got the Nexus – woot!
I had the luxury of setting up the Android over a couple of weeks (had a hospital trip scheduled in there and didn’t want to be struggling to use a new phone while still semi-anesthetized, lol). Luckily for me my old iPhone 3 GS and the Nexus took the same mini-SIM size (roomie’s new 5 needed a micro, I think they’re called?). Anyway, I could switch easily when ready, using the new or old phone over WiFi during the transition. Cool!!
To make a long story short (too late!!!): I love my Google Nexus Android!! It’s thin but large screen is awesome – perfect for videos, etc. It has the most amazing camera which takes awesome photos… (Mostly crazy cat lady pics of my fur baby, lol) And with 4X the memory of my old iPhone 3GS, I’ve got all the room for crazy cat lady pics I could need!
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. 😉
