The New Routine

The other day, Shawn came to a realization: he doesn’t hate routine after all. For me, routine is often the only thing that gets me out the door and when steps are changed, I am likely to either forget something important or get settled into a good read online then rush around at the last minute.

Most mornings run like this:

888029041_3d0bc7382a_z5:45, Shawn gets up, preps lunch(es) and coffee (but not this month — he’s off coffee and a few other things until December 6th.)
6:15, I get up get out the yoga mat and proceed to work through a known routine or complain at the screen as I adjust to a new routine; Shawn goes downstairs to punch the heavy bag for 10 minutes.
6:30, Kiddo gets up and gets her breakfast underway.
6:45, I get my breakfast and some coffee
6:50, we settle in front of our screens, with news on the TV
7:05, Kiddo gets ready for school
7:30, Kiddo leaves for the bus
8:00, we finish getting ready
8:20, we pill the cat before we leave then we head for campus, arriving between 8:30 and 8:45 depending on how much construction and traffic we run into along the way.

One day a week hubby and I leave a little early — typically on Friday — and have breakfast on campus together. Since I frequently have meetings or other schedule adjustments that change my lunch break and hubby walks around the ring on his lunch break, we don’t see each other very often during the day — maybe coffee 2 or 3 afternoons a week.

We’re still dialing in the after work routines — meal planning hasn’t made it into the mix so dinners have been a little more chaotic than we’d like. Other than that, things are rolling along well and the adjustment hasn’t been as difficult as we anticipated and has added the benefit of regular exercise to both hubby’s and my day as part of our routine, rather than something we had to find time to do.
