Tech-tack-toe

After much talking about doing a podcast, Mike and I finally sat down on Monday night and recorded our “pilot episode” — of course, I had not counted the two we’d done long ago (including “Weasels,” recorded in 2006) — so now I am considering this our “reboot” series. In Episode 0.5 we discuss the state of social media — touching on instability (ACID vs. BASE) , nymwars, and where things will be in three years (an eternity in internet-time)

To build the opener, I put out the call for soundbites on Tuesday and got an in-box full of audio joy — many thanks again to Veronica, Paul, Amy, Bruce, Alex, Suzanne (& her kids) and Fergus. I edited their tidbits late into the night Wednesday when I managed to get a good first draft. Thursday, I tweaked it a little, getting the opener down to under 30 seconds (which may still be too long)  and recorded a quick closing track (Mike and I will need to re-do that later). Tonight, we uploaded it to Archive.org :

Overall, I know it’s rough around the edges but we will improve. Things I know:

  • we will get better at the give and take — I think we were both trying to be extra careful to not talk over each other so there are a few more gaps than need be
  • we need a better mic (our Blue Snowflake flaked out — for months I thought it was just not compatible with my Mac; turns out it had/has a loose wire  so we are in the market for a new USB mic)
  • I will get better at using GarageBand (I’ve only really fiddled with it in a perfunctory way; I am still working out how to get the best results)
  • I will take advice from other podcasters! (Got any? Happy to listen & learn)
Tonight, I also submitted our RSS feed to iTunes — it’s filed under technology, but you can expect our subject to wander from that a fair bit. I don’t know how long it will take iTunes to confirm it. We’ll record Episode 1 on Monday (we’ll be talking about domain names, hosting and all that); I’ll let you know when it’s up!
