More Garden Progress

Got up early this morning — not intentionally but since I was up, I went outside to deal with some of the garden stuff. After the thankless and never-ending task of trying to keep tent caterpillars away from our apparently tasty apple trees, I watered the beds and got buzzed by a hummingbird. Serves me right for wearing a red shirt I guess.

Then I settled in to weeding one of the back beds and was pleased that it took little time at all. One spinach plant was ready to bolt so I pulled it out, there are just two more that made it through the great and soggy May. As it’s too late to plant more spinach, I opted for beets and radishes in its place. Three pea plants managed to grow; I planted more to keep them company. I am determined to have peas this year! I also really want the scarlet runners to grow but two attempts have failed… more planted today. It’s the scarlet runners that attract the hummingbirds to my yard every year and I’d like to keep them around.

One of my garden experiments this year are “French Horticultural Cranberry Beans” — the package I bought simply calls them “Drying Beans” — basically the pods are not intended to be eaten. I’ve planted them in the side bed under a tee-pee of 5 foot poles.

There’s lots more work to do and I’ll be heading out soon enough to get back at it.
