Seventeen Years Ago

2013-02-23 16.29.51Seventeen years ago, I put on something that approximated Medieval clothing, climbed in my truck, and drove to a little church in Saanich for a dinner put on by PARMA (the Pacific Association for the Recreation of the Middle Ages). The garb had been hastily thrown together from an old bedsheet and some strange polyester-fibre found at a thrift store but I was determined not to be so presumptuous as to dress as though I were upper class.

Little did I know that evening it would change my life and I would be wearing bedsheets when I met my soulmate.

At that dinner, wearing something he had borrowed for the night, was Mike. His friend, the wife of my friend & coworker, had decided we were a good fit and orchestrated the meeting, making sure we sat next to each other — the blindest of blind dates.

After the evening was over, I almost immediately kicked myself for not having got his number or any contact info so on the following Monday I asked my coworker. By later that afternoon, we had arranged a double date for the following week and from that day on, we were inseparable.

So here’s to 17 years, Mike. Thanks for falling for me despite the bedsheets.
