DECK is a four letter word

Deck WorkLast weekend, we started work on waterproofing the deck. Great idea except that about 25% of the deck was hiding rot underneath. UGH. Thankfully we had friends to help.

The rot meant gutting and rebuilding before we could get to anything else, which put us about a half a day behind. We got a fair bit done before everyone ran out of steam then the next morning Shawn and I went at it again.

Wednesday night, we got the drain in place but knew it needed more monkeying with. This morning, when we went outside to try and do what we could to better place the drain in the deck, I got into an argument with Shawn, basically insisting my way was the “only” way that would work.

Of course I might have been right but today I was wrongI really really hate it when I let my emotional stubbornness make decisions. It made things worse and subsequently put us behind (again) and put both of us in icy moods. Apologizing at that point didn’t help because I’d been such a stubborn [expletive] so I just tried to steer clear until we could get back to speaking terms (which luckily didn’t take too long).

When we took the boards off, we had tried to keep them “in order” so we could put the jigsaw puzzle back together. That did not work. For whatever reason, we ended up short of boards so… when we ran out of screws and both battery packs for the screwdrivers were dead, we threw in the towel for the day.

Shawn and I tried our best to fit in whatever boards were left then measure to see how many more were needed. We picked up spare boards after dinner. Come hell or high water tomorrow, we will finish it!

Of course we still have to clean the house and bake two cheesecakes and if it doesn’t pour with rain, mow the lawn…. but at least we will have a sturdy, rot-free deck!
