Writing News Update

Earlier today, the second “issue” of my writing newsletter was circulated. Sign up in the sidebar if you want to get news directly! Here’s what was inside:

The goals I made in the first newsletter were (1) to write at least 750 words a day (if I have no paying work, I will write blog posts or articles for our sites and work on fiction projects) and (2) to write three articles or blog posts per week for our sites. I chose this goal first to start getting into a habit of regular writing — I figured it would take a month to get into the habit.

I’m not up to 750 words a day yet — but most days I am writing; most days seem to be between 350-450. As for articles… that’s slow too but this weekend I did write two articles for Those DeWolfes Creative and two reviews for Cloud & Silver Lining. I also managed a solitary blog post for Flotsam & Jetsam.

The reviews are very brief but will be ongoing; the A to Z of Tech series was started in January of last year but stalled out on the letter C — oops. I’ve picked it up again now and hope to finish it this year. When it’s done I’ll bundle all the articles into a free e-book.

I have lots of other ideas spinning around in my mind but I am trying to focus on finishing what I have already started while keeping a running list of ideas (article titles, book or story plots, and so on). That means I’m working on finishing the A to Z of Tech Series, the Creative Conversations (social media tips) ebook, and the various other books and novels I have started (Better than Fifty, Undead, Urban Haiku, and a few more). So lets consider that goal number (3) finish what I started.

I am also looking ahead. I am pondering the best way to present a portfolio of my work, keeping my eye out for small writing jobs I can do, and being open to bigger jobs, should opportunity knock. I’ll admit it — I am scared to pitch anything. Freelancing is all about selling myself and that isn’t one of my stronger skills. I do know that once I get the first pitch out there, the rest will be easy but I may need a nudge.

In the meantime, I’ll be finishing this big pile of other things…
