I wish I could say we were surprised when Kiddo lost her phone this week. She lost it on the bus and I phoned immediately to report it, but there’s been no sign of it.
We pondered what to do about the situation because neither of us really wanted her to go without a phone for any significant amount of time — it’s how we keep in touch and allow her a lot more freedom — but we also didn’t want to buy a new phone again.
I have been through a few other phones on the same carrier though, and I still have two of them so after a hunt for the charging cables, I charged them and we trooped off to see if they would still work on the network.
It took a bit of effort and a couple of rounds of the service rep waiting on hold, but we managed to get it moved on to her account. She is now happily talking and texting on my old LG260 (aka LG Rumor) with the slide out keyboard she loves so much. Plus, it’s green, and “none of (her) friends have a green phone.”
Oddly the tech from this photo (December 2008) has all been passed along — she now has both the phone and the iPod Touch and the slightly broken headphones found a use as my obvious do-not-disturb-headphones at work (sometimes people don’t notice when I wear ear buds).
However, we also popped into another carrier to talk about switching to a family plan with shared data. She’s on pay-as-you-go and Shawn is now month-to-month as his phone is paid off, so it’s just me and my dud iPhone to pay off and walk away from. We’re looking at moving both our grownup phones to something in the Samsung Galaxy line (likely SIIIs which are cheaper now that the S4 is everywhere) but the jury is out on Kiddo — she’s going to have to prove she can stop losing and forgetting important things for a while. In the meantime, if you know anyone selling a SIII, let us know, as we are in the market for some used or clearance handsets.
